40 Years of Av�԰� Celebration

Our 40 years of Av�԰� Celebration was a momentous event, featuring nostalgic tours, inspiring speeches, and joyous reunions.

This year, we celebrated 41 years of Av�԰� Christi College, and next year, Yidarra Catholic Primary School will reach its 40th anniversary. As an amalgamated College since 2022, we continue to honour 40 years of combined history that has shaped us into the unified College we are today. This celebration not only honoured our past but also set the stage for a future filled with promise and ambition.

Welcome to Week 6

Student Leadership at Av�԰�

I had the privilege this week of attending the 2025 Prefect Av�԰� where our senior student leaders took time away to learn about leading at a whole school level and to plan key initiatives that they would like to focus on next year.

Our 2025 Prefects are to be commended for the incredibly positive and enthusiastic way that they fully invested themselves in the camp activities. They enjoyed discovering more about leading through service and compassion to positively shape the culture of the school. The students showed a terrific understanding of their role in continuing to shape the excellent legacy of Av�԰� Christi that has been built across the last 40 years.

Students were inspired by 2024 Head Boy Hudson Pivac and Head Girl Kiara Trant who generously gave of their time to share their leadership story with the incoming group. Our 2025 leaders worked closely with the College Executive team to shape up strategies that would align to the Vision of the College under our four strategic pillars. In giving our students genuine voice in the life of their school, we promote a sense of agency where they can positively shape the environment around them. Student developed strategies will form part of the whole school student leadership team workshop agenda for next year.

Genuine leadership opportunities can provide a broad range of benefits for students as highlighted by Lavery and Coffee from UNDA:

“Evidence suggests various benefits for students involved in school-based leadership. That is, student leadership is not without its rewards (Hawkes, 1999). For instance, there are advantages for student leaders working in collaborative activities such as team projects (Gordon, 1994), student councils (Carey, 1994) and student leadership teams (Appleton, 2002). Researchers have also observed that when students are given opportunities to lead, they can play a significant role in various school decision-making processes (Rafferty, 1997); they can make a genuine and significant contribution to the school community (Lavery 1999), and they are able to effect change (Carey, 1994). Further benefits include the development of confidence and self-esteem (Tucker, n.d.), improved leadership skills (Hine, 2013) as well as the opportunity to serve others (McNae, 2011).”

In a similar way to the Year 12 students, our Year 6 student leaders are role models for all students in the Junior school. We have recently reshaped our Year 6 Leadership program to align to our core pillars of Catholic Identity and Mission, Community, Learning and Stewardship to promote continuity across the College. This allows improved connection between students across our K-12 College, clarity around strategic initiatives and quality peer support and effective modelling. We commend those Year 5 students who have expressed their interest in leading next year.

At Av�԰� we are strong advocates of leadership at all levels – students don’t necessarily need a badge to lead. We encourage each one of our students to live out our values in a real way and choose to fully invest themselves in the life of the College. In this way, students become role models for others and, through their actions, can inspire, motivate, help and support others – they become leaders making a real and positive difference. In being compassionately present for others through giving of themselves and being the Good Samaritan, students model the leadership of Jesus through putting others first. We encourage students to seek out the many different pathways and opportunities that support their personal leadership growth at Av�԰�.

As you know we have a simple yet very clear aspirational vision for all of our students at the College – that is to be Outstanding for Others. When students step up to lead, whether in a formal position or not, they grow their confidence and capacity to positively shape their current and future world.

Friends of Av�԰�

We are very grateful for the terrific support of parents and caregivers who generously gave of their time on Wednesday last week to support the Friends of Av�԰�. We valued the positive input provided over the course of the evening to support the ongoing improvement and growth journey of the College.

We are thankful to our Friends of Av�԰� Executive team for their leadership and also to our year level Classroom Community Connectors for their support in growing connections and a sense of belonging amongst year groups this year.

As always, I am most grateful for the passionate support of our parents and caregivers at the College as it is through this important partnership that we continue to collectively strive toward providing the best possible learning environment for students. It is working together with respectful collegiality, open communication and trust that we create a school where our students can flourish.

The College continues to receive an unprecedented amount of enrolment applications so to avoid disappointment in missing out on a place, please ensure you have lodged an enrolment application for your child to join their siblings at Av�԰� Christi College! If you have a child born between 1 July 2022 – 30 June 2023, please apply now for 4 Year Old Kindergarten commencing in 2027. To avoid missing out on a place, we encourage enrolment applications to be lodged in advance as places are limited.

Uniform Shop Update

Purchasing Uniforms for 2025

A gentle reminder that from the beginning of Term 1 in 2025, all current Year 2 students who are moving into Year 3 in 2025 will be required to purchase both the formal summer uniform sport uniforms and no longer wear the Play-based uniforms. bFamilies are welcome to purchase their uniforms by visiting our Uniform Shop, during our usual Term 4 opening times to get a head start on your new summer and sport uniform requirements for 2025.

The last day of Flexischool orders for pick up in 2024 is Monday 2 December for collection on Wednesday 4 December. Any Flexischools orders after this date will be available for collection from Friday 24 January 2025.

The Uniform Shop is situated on the Parish side of the James Nestor Centre. Uniform Shop parking for Senior School is available through the Murdoch Drive entrance. Turn left at the staff carpark and proceed towards the roundabout at the end of the parking area. The gate between the Parish carpark and the Senior School will be locked during the day from 9am – 2pm in the interests of student safety.

There will be two general open days for the College Uniform Shop held in the week commencing 3 February 2025. No appointments are necessary for these open days:

As we prepare to enter the season of Advent, we’re called to reflect on how we can live out our College values of courage, commitment, and compassion. This year’s Advent Appeal invites our College community to support Saint Vincent de Paul in their efforts to bring joy and relief to those in need. From Weeks 5 to 8, we’ll be collecting donations in each Classroom in the Junior School, and each Homeroom in the Senior School. You can contribute festive non-perishable food items or a small Christmas gift under $20, wrapped and labelled with age and gender.

Let’s show courage by stepping up to help, commitment by participating wholeheartedly, and compassion by making a difference in the lives of others this Christmas.

Thank you in advance for your generous contributions. The plan is to present our College’s donation to representatives from the Bateman Chapter of Saint Vincent de Paul at the whole school assembly in Week 8.

Learn to Swim at Av�԰�

Av�԰� Christi College offers a Learn to Swim Program onsite at the Jennifer Reilly Aquatic Centre. The aquatic centre features a covered and heated 25 metre, eight-lane indoor lap and water polo pool, a separate 12 metre learn-to-swim pool and terrace seating for 180 people. Our Learn to Swim Program is facilitated by Speed With Style, a company who provide a unique approach to swim teaching called Individualised Custom Teaching, which was developed by Dr Nigel Williams in collaboration with head coach and Speed with Style Founder - John Williams.

The Learn to Swim program is available to both Av�԰� Christi College students and those external to the College.

Start your new year with an exciting experience at WAAPA. Come along this January for a fun-packed program where you'll meet new people, sharpen your skills, and get plenty of performance opportunities. WAAPA’s Summer School offers a wide variety of performing arts courses tailored for secondary school students. Whether you're going into Year 7 or Year 12, there's something for every aspiring artist—classes in Acting for Stage, Dance, Acting for Camera, Jazz Music, and Music Theatre. Our expert instructors welcome students of all skill levels and experiences. Amelia McIvor

We are thrilled to announce that Amelia McIvor, a Year 6 student at Av�԰� Christi College, competed in the SSWA Primary Triathlon Championships today at Champion Lakes. Representing Av�԰� Christi, Amelia impressively won the 12-year-old girls' category by over 2 minutes!

Her dedication, hard work, and athleticism have truly paid off, and we couldn't be prouder of her outstanding achievement. Well done, Amelia, for bringing this victory home and for being a remarkable ambassador for our school.

Term 4

Welcome to Week 4

Sport at Av�԰�

The College recently held its annual Burgundy White and Blue Sports Presentation Evening in the Caroline Payne Theatre. This important event on the College calendar allows us to reflect and celebrate the wonderful student and staff contribution to our rich sporting culture.

Involvement in sport is an important ingredient of a healthy lifestyle – from both a physical and mental wellbeing perspective. Sport also provides opportunity to build a broad array of transferable skills that support holistic development and promote success in future pathways.

The Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care in highlighting “why sport matters” says that sport for students can “motivate kids to be active which can also improve school results” and “instil habits that will help kids remain healthy and active throughout life”. They say that sport can “help people feel included in a social group” and can be “a force for social change”.

At Av�԰� Christi, we therefore prioritise sport at the College and celebrate the involvement of those students who represent our illustrious legacy each time they step out onto the sporting arena. It was wonderful, therefore, to see so many students being recognised at the Burgundy White and Blue Sports Presentation Evening for their achievements.

During the evening we were privileged to hear from Head of Junior School Ms Katya Anderson and her Mum, Carrie, about their journey as elite athletes. Both Katya and Carrie were recently chosen to represent Australia at the 2024 Multisport World Championships in Townsville. They tied their message to our College Values of Courage, Commitment and Compassion: “Courage is essential as athletes push beyond physical and mental limits, confronting fears and overcoming adversity in the face of intense competition. Commitment drives the relentless pursuit of improvement, requiring discipline and dedication through rigorous training and setbacks. Compassion is equally important, fostering a sense of sportsmanship and empathy—whether it's toward competitors, teammates, or oneself during the demanding journey of achieving personal bests. These values not only shape champions but also build resilient, respectful individuals on and off the field.”

Our athletes were inspired with this message as they continue to strive toward their personal goals within their particular sporting pursuit. This message of course transcends the sporting arena to encompass all aspects of life – that is, in striving to be Outstanding for Others, we need to live out our Values in a genuine way. To achieve our goals, we need to courageously step outside of our comfort zone to grow; we need to commit fully to our goals and hold ourselves accountable for our actions; and we need to compassionately support others, celebrating with them along the journey.

Congratulations to all of the students who were recognised for their excellent sporting contribution to the College during the evening. In maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle, we continue to encourage all students at the College to participate in the broad array of sporting and physical educational opportunities at the College.

Year 12 Graduation

We were thrilled to formally acknowledge and celebrate Our Graduating Class of 2024 at our Graduation Mass and Ceremony held at St Mary’s Cathedral on Wednesday 16 October.

Our departing Year 12s have epitomised what it means to be the Av�԰� Christi, the Body of Christ made up of many unique and special parts, through their openness and acceptance of others. They have created a wonderful sense of belonging and connection amongst their cohort, where each person is known, recognised and celebrated. They have taken joy in the success of others and have been truly present for one another.

Our Graduates have lived out our College Vision of being Outstanding for Others by investing themselves fully in the life of our school. They have taken full advantage of the multiple opportunities and pathways available to grow personally, and also to grow our school. The students have taken up the mantle of leaders of our College in a real way and have positively shaped our community for the future.

We wish our 2024 Graduates all of the very best for the future. We also wish those students currently completing WACE exams well and encourage them to continue to reach out for support from teachers whenever needed.

2025 Year 12 students

I had the privilege yesterday to speak with our 2025 Year 12 students upon their return to the school as leaders of our community. I took the opportunity to continue our focus on living out our Values and challenged them, in picking up the leadership mantle from our 2024 Graduates, to model this through action.

Our Year 12 students play an important role in shaping positive legacy and culture at the College so it was wonderful to welcome our 2025 cohort back to the community, after weeks of exams, courses and programs, to formally start their final year of study at Av�԰�.

During the assembly, we took time to celebrate the myriad of different pathways students are undertaking and reminded them to commit fully, to step into their learning and to seek support whenever needed. In becoming agents of their own learning, they best set themselves up for future success in whatever field they choose. We look forward to the positive impact that our 2025 Year 12 students will have on our College.

We also look forward to our upcoming Prefect’s Av�԰� where our student leaders will represent the cohort in developing key student-led initiatives as part of their planned intents for next year. This process promotes the voice of our students and enables them to ensure they leave a positive legacy on the life of the College.

Dear Parents and Guardians

As we step into the final term of this academic year, I am filled with a sense of excitement and

anticipation for the beautiful journey that lies ahead.

The start of Term 4 brings with it a renewed sense of energy and purpose. Our students have

shown remarkable commitment and courage throughout the year, and we are immensely proud of their achievements thus far. Term 4 also brings with it a range of exciting events with which to finish off the year.

2025 Student Leaders

We are excited for the Student Leadership Process for 2025 to begin, which will be a pivotal opportunity for our year 5 students as they prepare for their final year of primary school.

This year, we have introduced some new elements to the process to better reflect the evolving nature of leadership in our school. Rather than the traditional approach, students will now complete an application form as the first step, followed by an interview with relevant leaders under each of our school's leadership pillars. I wish all students the best of luck in this process.

Junior Car park – kiss and drop zone

To ensure a smooth and safe flow of traffic during drop-off and pick-up times, we kindly ask all parents and caregivers to adhere to the posted signs and designated areas. The kiss-and-drop zone is strictly for drop-off and pick-up only; please do not park in this area, as it disrupts the flow of traffic and affects the safety of our students.

As the safety of our students is paramount, we also ask that you avoid speeding and remain attentive to your surroundings. Following these guidelines will help maintain a safe and efficient environment for everyone in our school community. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

A friendly reminder to all families and duty before school commences at 8:15am. We request that students remain with you until that time to ensure their safety. We offer a before-school care program through Av�԰� Australia if you require an earlier drop-off.

Class Allocations 2025

In Term 4, teachers will begin looking at class groupings for 2025. Many factors are considered when selecting class placements for students, and each child’s best interests are the main priority when these decisions are made. Class placements are made in consultation with all year-level teachers, and significant time and consideration is given to this task. Students will be asked by their Classroom Teacher to nominate five friends, of which at least one will be placed in their 2025 class.

Class placements are made with due consideration of gender, pastoral needs, social and emotional needs, special learning needs, and relationships. Every effort is made to place children where they will have the greatest opportunity to succeed. Parents should be aware that requesting a certain teacher is not a consideration in the class allocation process.

Once class allocations have been finalised by the Leadership Team, they cannot be changed. Class lists will be made available to families at the conclusion of our Move-up Day. I thank you in advance for your understanding and support.

Move-up Day

On Wednesday, 4 December, students from Kindy to Year 5 will undertake a transition session, which is designed to provide students with a smooth move into their 2025 class. Students will be informed of their 2025 classroom allocation and will then spend an afternoon session with their 2025 classroom teacher and classmates. This session will be focused on familiarising students with their new learning space and undertaking some fun activities.

Class lists will be distributed to families that afternoon, and parents are encouraged to support their child’s placement and successful transition by engaging in positive discussion about the process and excitement about the future possibilities for their child. As advised above, no changes to class allocations will be possible.

Call for Panel Volunteers

We are seeking 4 to 5 enthusiastic individuals to join a panel discussion chaired by our Year 10 Student Leadership team. The details are as follows:

Date: Friday 29 November
Time: Period 4, 12.05 PM to 12.55 PM (discussion likely no longer than 30 minutes)
Audience: Year 10 cohort
Presenter: Year 10 Student Leadership team

We’re looking for volunteers from any industry to share their career pathway stories and tips. All ages are welcome, and we prefer a diverse mix of panel members. Additionally, we seek current university/TAFE students or apprentices to share their experiences.

Dance Ensemble Auditions Form 2025

The DANCE ENSEMBLE is a specialist group of senior school students, comprising dancers from Years 7 to 12. The Ensemble aims to provide differentiated learning opportunities that extend our senior students and better prepare them for success in dance and beyond.

Dance Ensemble represents the College through performances at events such as the Catholic Performing Arts Festival and the annual Dance Gala and other events throughout the year.

Auditions:

Term 4, Week 5 – 2024
Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th November at 7.15am to 8.30am
The audition will consist of participating in a contemporary dance class with each exercise performed in groups of 5 or 6
The adjudication panel will consist of the Dance Teachers and Year 12 Dance Captains who will also lead the class.

Welcome to Week 10

Living Our Values

A warm welcome back to the start of a new term. I hope that families enjoyed time together over the break and that the final term of the year has started well for everyone.

Term 4

The start of the new term brings with it a sense of freshness and renewal. The holiday break gives time to pause and reflect on previous work and efforts, with a view of setting new goals moving forward. This is a strategy that we encourage across the College - staff and students alike.

We understand the importance of the continuous learning journey where we learn from mistakes in a bid to grow and develop. We promote the idea that assessment is an important tool to help us grow – it is an essential component of the teaching and learning cycle. Education Standards NSW indicate that there are several approaches to assessment, including the following:

Assessment For Learning:
- Using evidence about students' knowledge, understanding and skills to inform teaching and to clarify student learning and understanding.
Assessment Of Learning:
- Using evidence of student learning to assess achievement against outcomes and standards.
Assessment As Learning:
- Students are their own assessors. They monitor their own learning, ask questions and use a range of strategies to decide what they know and can do, and how to use assessment information for new learning.

Setting challenging but achievable goals and then putting in key steps to work toward these goals is an important strategy for student growth. Students are then challenged to hold themselves accountable for what they have planned and to take ownership of their own learning. Our teachers of course are beside our students every step of the way, providing support, opportunity, guidance and quality feedback.

The setting of goals, aligned to students utilising assessment to learn, speaks to the important concept of student agency where they step forward to manage their own learning. This important skill is one that will stand students in very good stead for their future world. Of course, parents and the College are coagents with students as we provide rich support and care to provide the conditions and opportunities to allow them to flourish and to have the confidence to step outside of their comfort zone to learn.

Year 12 Graduation

At this point of the term our focus is drawn to our Graduating Class of 2024 as they celebrate their journey through the College and look excitedly to their own future pathways. It is a bittersweet moment for us at the College as we farewell our graduands from the community. For so long they have been a daily part of Av�԰� Christi and have left an indelible mark on the College, so we will miss their presence next year. Equally though, we are very excited at their future prospects as they write the next chapter of their own story to positively shape the world around them.

As key stewards of the Av�԰� Christi story this year, our Year 12 students have demonstrated the Courage to act with integrity, the Commitment to be accountable, and the Compassion to serve others selflessly. In embracing these Values, they have fulfilled our Mission as faithful stewards, building a just and compassionate society where all can thrive.

We are looking forward to gathering together as a community on Wednesday this week to recognise and formally farewell our graduands at our whole school assembly during the day and at our Graduation Mass and Ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral in the evening.

The College Uniform

With the switch to the summer uniform at the start of Term 4, it gives us the collective opportunity to ensure that we are suitably attired each day with an understanding of the importance of wearing our uniform with pride. Into our first year of the new K-12 College uniform, students represent 40 years of tradition and the thousands of students who have passed through the College gates at both campuses across the years.

Wearing the Av�԰� Christi crest on our uniform implies a direct link with our history and traditions. It reminds us of our connectedness as a community across the decades and how we all have a role to play in promoting our positive culture by properly wearing our uniform each day at, to, and from school.

College Calendar

As a school which prides itself on offering a broad range of growth opportunities for students, we consequently have a very busy College calendar. Our aim in designing and building the calendar, with assistance from our wonderfully supporting Friends of Av�԰�, is to ensure clear communication for families across the K-12 community. Welcome to Term 4! As we embark on the final stretch of the school year, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on the tremendous achievements of our students so far. With all the hard work and growth behind us, we eagerly anticipate the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

This sentiment captures the spirit of our students as they prepare to face new challenges and adventures in the coming year.

Swimming Lessons Years 1 to 6:

We are thrilled to introduce in-school swimming lessons this year. As part of a trial, we will be running a smaller program to assess and refine for 2025. Swimming is an important part of our physical education curriculum, helping students build confidence and skills in the water.

Years 4 to 6: Three-day program (2–4 December)

Great Book Swap

The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading while raising funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Over term 4 the Junior school has been collecting books ready for our book swap day. The idea is to swap a favourite book in exchange for a donation. Book donations can be dropped into the designated tubs located at junior admin and the library before Monday 27 November. We are look at pre-loved books in good conditions, suitable for the ages of 4 to 12.

Time: 8:15am to 8:45am
Cost: Gold coin donation.

Supervision out-of-school hours:

Please be reminded that school staff are unable to supervise children before 8:15 am or after 3:30 pm. We have noticed a growing number of students being dropped off before 8:00 am and left unsupervised. For their safety, we ask that you utilise Av�԰� Australia if early drop-off or late pick-up is needed.

URSTRONG Peer Support

On Wednesday, October 23 our Year 6 Students will lead peer mentoring sessions aligned with the principals of our URSTRONG program. Running from week 3- week 8 of the term, our students will connect to continue to build their sense of belonging and build their friendships across their House Groups at our Junior School. Through engaging, interactive and fun activities this student-led initiative is another way our young learners are truly being ‘Outstanding For Others.’

Dance Ensemble Auditions Form 2025

Dance Ensemble represents the College through performances at events such as the Catholic Performing Arts Festival and the annual Dance Gala and other events throughout the year.

Auditions:

Term 4, Week 5 – 2024
Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th November at 7.15am to 8.30am
The audition will consist of participating in a contemporary dance class with each exercise performed in groups of 5 or 6
The adjudication panel will consist of the Dance Teachers and Year 12 Dance Captains who will also lead the class.

WAAPA Summer School 2025

Daniella Watson

We are thrilled to share the outstanding achievements of Daniella Watson from 3G! Earlier this year, Daniella was selected for the WA State Development team for Calisthenics.

During the recent school holidays, Daniella and her team travelled to Darwin to compete in the Frangipani Challenge. They performed six items, securing victories in five of them, and were crowned the overall winners of the Frangipani Cup.

A huge congratulations to Daniella for her remarkable success and dedication. We are incredibly proud of her accomplishments!

Hudson Pivac and Cooper Moore

Congratulations to Hudson Pivac and Cooper Moore who stood out among all ACC footy students, earning their spots on the 2024 ACC Boys AFL All Stars Team. Only 23 players were chosen, making their selection even more impressive. Special shout-out to Cooper for being named Vice Captain!

Last Thursday at Fremantle Oval, the ACC team showcased their skills and secured a fantastic win against SSWA. Great job to all the players for their dedication and efforts.

A special thanks to our Acting Head of Health & Physical Education, Daniel Curtis, who was integral to the process as selector and Assistant Coach.

Sam recently swam at the Queensland Open Water State Championships on the Sunshine Coast, placing 2nd in the 17-year-old boys' 10k with an impressive time of 2:12 and a personal best by 13 minutes. What a fantastic achievement! Huge congratulations to Sam for all his hard work, dedication, and amazing performance. Well done Sam!

Term 3

Welcome to Week 10

Living Our Values

We gathered today as a school community to celebrate students living out our College Values and to commission our incoming 2025 Prefect team. We were pleased to welcome parents, caregivers, families and friends and thank them for engaging in this special occasion.

During the assembly, I reflected on what has been a busy but incredibly rewarding Term 3 and commended the broad number of students choosing to step forward and engage in the multitude of opportunities available both in and out of the classroom.

These students have demonstrated the capacity to:

Invest in the plethora of holistic learning experiences available at the College
Set ambitious goals
Positively involve themselves in the community
Be open to all experiences and challenges
Model Jesus through kindness and respect

Taking control of their own growth journey will stand students in very good stead for their future world. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) suggests that this concept of student agency is very important in enabling students to flourish and thrive. They say that:

“Student agency is the capacity to set a goal, reflect and act responsibly to effect change. It is about acting rather than being acted upon; shaping rather than being shaped; and making responsible decisions and choices rather than accepting those determined by others. It gives students the ability and the will to positively influence their own lives and the world around them.”

The OECD also indicates that, when students are agents in their learning, they:

“Are also more likely to have “learned how to learn” – an invaluable skill that they can and will use throughout their lives.”

During the assembly we celebrated those students who have demonstrated a high level of agency and lived out our values in a truly genuine way. The students were recipients of our auspicious Colours and Service awards which recognised their:

Courage to step forward, go beyond themselves to make a genuine difference and to move outside of their comfort zones to discover and learn.
Commitment to live out the ideals of our College, positively shape our community and represent our 40 year legacy with pride
Compassion in modelling Jesus and being truly present for one another, putting the needs of others first.

These students are wonderful role models to us all and so we were pleased to recognise their considerable efforts and achievements.

During the assembly we also recognised a very important phase in the leadership life of the College in celebrating the impact of our outgoing student Prefect team and formally installing our incoming senior leaders for 2025.

This important aspect of leadership at Av�԰� Christi, ensures that the unbroken line of senior leaders continues. In passing on the baton, our current leaders charge the incoming group with the important stewardship responsibility of leading our College community.

Led by Head Girl, Kiara Trant, and Head Boy, Hudson Pivac we acknowledge the indelible mark that our 2024 College Prefects have had on the life and culture of the Av�԰� community. Through their selfless actions and commitment, our College Prefects have epitomised true leadership as defined by author and inspirational speaker Simon Sinek when he says that:

“We call someone a leader not because they are in charge but because they have the courage to go first. To risk first. To trust first.” He continues, “The best leaders are also the best followers. They follow a purpose, cause, or belief bigger than themselves.”

Our Year 12 leaders have lived out Pope Francis’ definition of leadership when he says:

“For leadership there is only one road: service” and “Be leaders wherever it behooves you to be. Leaders of thought, leaders of action, leaders of joy, leaders of hope, leaders of the construction of a better world.”

Congratulations to our Year 12 Prefect team for their outstanding leadership this year.

I extend my gratitude to all of our Year 12 students for leading our College as the graduating class of 2024. We acknowledge their impact and their legacy in shaping our unique Av�԰� story. These students are all very much in our thoughts and prayers as they navigate the final few weeks toward their graduation and we look forward to soon celebrating this special occasion with them and their families.

In farewelling our current Prefects, we warmly welcomed our 2025 Prefect group and formally commissioned them during the assembly. We congratulate our incoming Prefects, led by Head Girl, Emily Boudville, and Head Boy, Xavier Petta and acknowledge their dedication in stepping forward to lead.

Congratulations to the following students who took the pledge today to lead our College as Prefects for 2025. We wish them all of the very best in their leadership roles for next year and look forward to the positive impact they will have on our College community.

I would also like to acknowledge those Year 11 students who expressed interest in a leadership role but not receive a formal position. We applaud their courage to put their hand up to lead and look forward to their contribution to the College as part of the 2025 graduating cohort.

As the term draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank parents, caregivers and families for their engagement in the College community. We value this important partnership as we work together to create a flourishing learning environment for our students.

I would also like to acknowledge our very dedicated K-12 College staff. We thank them for their considerable efforts in supporting student learning and for providing such a broad array of engaging and personalised learning pathways for students.

Xavier’s journey at Av�԰� Christi College began in Year 7, and he has since immersed himself in all aspects of college life, particularly The Arts. His involvement has opened numerous opportunities for growth and skill development, and he has formed lasting friendships along the way.

Emily’s journey at Av�԰� Christi College began in 3-Year-Old Kindy at Yidarra. Over the past 14 years, she has witnessed the school’s growth and transformation. Emily has always prioritized seizing every opportunity presented to her.

Background:

Primary School: Yidarra Catholic Primary School
Inspiration: Emily was motivated by the chance to make a difference and be a role model, inspired by the prefect teams since 2020.

Vision for 2025: Emily’s priorities include balancing her studies with enjoying time with friends and making the most of every opportunity at Av�԰�. She believes in role modeling as the most effective method of promotion within the school community.

Leadership Qualities:

Courage: Trying new things, such as applying for Head Girl.
Commitment: Participating in extracurricular activities across arts, sports, and academics.
Compassion: Checking up on friends, offering help, and taking time for self-care.

ACC A Division Athletics Final Results

Learn to Swim at Av�԰�

Av�԰� Christi College offers a Learn to Swim Program onsite at the Jennifer Reilly Aquatic Centre. The aquatic centre features a covered and heated 25 metre, eight-lane indoor lap and water polo pool, a separate 12 metre learn-to-swim pool and terrace seating for 180 people.

Our Learn to Swim Program is facilitated by Speed With Style, a company who provide a unique approach to swim teaching called Individualised Custom Teaching, which was developed by Dr Nigel Williams in collaboration with head coach and Speed with Style Founder - John Williams.

The Learn to Swim program is available to both Av�԰� Christi College students and those external to the College.

Year 5 Digital Technology

This term, Year 5s have been learning about programming. They learnt how computers execute a function through a set of codes. The introductory lesson began with coding activities on Scratch, where students developed their knowledge of block coding using parameters such as events and motion to animate a sprite on Scratch. Then as they became more confident in the coding language, we introduced mini robots, The Codey Rocky.

With the Codey Rocky, students learn how to code the mini bot to move and repeat certain functions using the iteration variable in their block coding . Students had lots of fun making their bots move around the class, detect various obstacles and even make certain sounds when the voice command “Hello” is initiated. Stay tune for more learning in this space.

Powerful Problem Solving

This year, our junior school students have been actively enhancing their problem-solving skills through engaging in rich mathematical tasks. These activities promote critical thinking, discussion, collaboration, and reasoning. Through a structured inquiry approach, students are presented with mathematical challenges, work in small groups to solve them, and then share their insights. This process, facilitated by teachers, helps deepen their understanding and mathematical fluency.

Some of our teachers have been participating in research-based professional learning through the Lighthouse Maths Program and sharing their knowledge with the team. This initiative focuses on problem-solving and reasoning strategies that foster deep conceptual understanding in mathematics. By integrating these techniques into the classroom, our aim is to further improve student engagement and achievement in maths.

On Wednesday, 11 September, we proudly opened our Visual Arts and Technology and Enterprise Exhibition. This event celebrates the creativity, hard work, and outstanding contributions of our students, showcasing a diverse range of artworks and projects that highlight their talents and dedication.

The selected pieces represent the best of each year group, celebrating the unique gifts and talents of our students. This exhibition not only reflects their artistic abilities but also their commitment to excellence and their courage to express themselves creatively.

We were honoured to have esteemed external judges for this year’s Art Awards. Erin Knight, a renowned Western Australian artist known for her work with mixed media, judged the Senior School entries. The Junior entries were evaluated by Teresa Kroyer and Lorraine Francis, both of whom are talented artists contributing significantly to our vibrant West Australian community.

ACC ISP Athletics Carnival Highlights

On Friday, 6th September, our Av�԰� Christi students shone brightly at the ACC ISP Athletics Carnival held at McGilvray Oval. The event, organised by the Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA (ACC), aims to provide quality sport and recreation activities for all student abilities. The Inclusive Sports Programme (ISP) is a cornerstone of the ACC mission, ensuring Year 7-12 students with disabilities have equitable access to these opportunities. Our students participated in all events with incredible enthusiasm and determination. Well done to our superstar competitors for displaying the College values of Courage, Commitment and Compassion.

Outstanding in the Arts

The Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools and Colleges in Western Australia was established to help the students of Catholic schools and colleges experience the spirit and tradition of the performing arts.

The Performing Arts Festival commenced in Week 1 of Term 3, showcasing the incredible talents of our students. This year, we proudly presented an impressive lineup featuring 47 solo acts, 6 duets, 8 music ensembles, and 4 dance ensembles.

Our students have truly embodied the College values of Courage, Commitment and Compassion, impressing audiences with their solo performances, duos, and group acts in dance, drama, and music. A huge congratulations and heartfelt thanks to all participants for their dedication and hard work and to the staff and families who have supported these students.

We are delighted to announce that the College has been awarded the prestigious Servite Friar’s Award for our College Dance Collage which is our second year receiving the award, along with the Dominican Sister’s Award for our Musical Production, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Xavier & Salvado Week

Last week we celebrated Xavier and Salvado week!

Students from both Houses came together for an amazing week filled with exciting activities and plenty of food. To kick off the celebrations, our House Coordinators from Xavier and Salvado hosted a belonging breakfast. Students had the opportunity to take photos with their friends, enjoy the food and sunshine and get their House photo taken on the Junior School oval.

The week was filled with bonding activities, games and students coming together in faith and service. With the Salvado motto, 'Perseverance and Stewardship', and Xavier’s 'Empowered to Achieve', our students and staff truly embodied these ideals and what the Houses represent.

To conclude the weeks activities, a beautiful liturgy was held on Friday, where our students came together to give thanks and learn more about Saint Francis Xavier and Patron Bishop Rosendo Salvado. Representatives from all of the 8 Houses then gathered to partake in a tree planting ceremony, where together, students planted a tree to symbolise growth and our College values of Community and Stewardship. This activity is a reflection of the strength, unity and spirit of our community.

Thank you to everyone who participated and made Xavier and Salvado week so special. Thanks to your positive contributions, we have successfully raised funds for our House charities. Together, we continue to be Outstanding for Others.

Tournament of Minds

On the 31st of August, seven Av�԰� teams (a College record) totalling 45 students took part in the Tournament of Minds, a competition designed to develop diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment.

Given only six weeks to solve a complex challenge culminating in a ten-minute presentation, this competition is not for the faint of heart.

All seven teams, I am very proud to say, conducted themselves with the utmost poise and professionalism. Their ability to dig deep within themselves to produce performances of the highest calibre cannot be understated, something that did not go unnoticed by judges’ overall feedback.

I am, as always, in awe of how Av�԰� students rise to the occasion, and it has been an absolute pleasure watching the TOM teams flourish during the six weeks of Tournament of Minds.

They are a credit to themselves and the College.

This, however, could not have been achieved without the generosity of the TOM facilitators - Simone Preedy, Cheryl-Lynn Mothiram, Joanne Stevens, Lucy Townsend, Sumi Quinn, Nadine Low and Katelyn Ralston who stepped in at the last minute.

Inspiring Resilience: Mr. Brant Garvey’s Visit to Our Junior School

On Wednesday, September 4, our Junior School had the immense pleasure of welcoming Mr. Brant Garvey, a remarkable single-limb triathlete, to share his inspirational journey with our students. Mr. Garvey’s story is one of perseverance, dedication, and triumph, culminating in his representation of Australia at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, where paratriathlon made its debut.

From the moment Mr. Garvey began his presentation, our Year 1-6 students were captivated. His narrative of overcoming physical challenges and pushing the boundaries of what is possible resonated deeply with everyone in the room. It was a powerful reminder of the incredible adaptive abilities of our bodies and minds.

Mr. Garvey’s story beautifully illustrated our college values of Courage, Commitment and Compassion. His journey is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the importance of never giving up, no matter the obstacles we face.

Welcome to Week 8

School of Choice

As a school which prioritises the holistic development of students, we aim to provide a multitude of different growth pathways for them both in and outside of the classroom. It has been wonderful over recent weeks to see students across the K-12 College participate fully in the many and varied opportunities on offer. It gives me pleasure to provide you with a very small snapshot of the rich and broad array of learning happening within our community.

The Arts

I have written at length of the success of our Arts programs at the College and how they provide a wonderfully creative and expressive outlet for students to share their perspectives, thoughts and voice. Last week our students shone at the Catholic Arts Festival Dance concert held at the Perth Convention Centre. The student performances were simply outstanding, showcasing their prodigious dance talents and representing the College with pride. Students are to be commended for the amazing efforts and dedication they have commited to their craft.

This significant dance performance is on the back of a busy time for Performing Arts staff and students. They have fully invested in the multiple dance, drama and music opportunities provided by the Festival over the course of the term. I am extremely proud to announce that the College has been awarded the Servite Friar’s Award for our College Dance Collage again this year, along with the Dominican’s Sister’s Award for our Musical Production, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. These awards will be presented at the Spirit of the Arts Festival this coming Monday evening, where our Dance Ensemble has been invited to showcase their outstanding performance from last Friday’s concert. Congratulations to all staff, students and families involved.

In addition to the Festival events, last week Music students from across the years were involved in our own Ensemble evening, which showcased their musical talents to an authentic audience. We also held our special Year 11 Drama evening last Thursday in the Caroline Payne Theatre.

From a Visual Arts and Technology & Enterprise perspective, we are very excited to exhibit students works from across the K-12 College at our upcoming Av�԰� Christi College Exhibition which opens on Wednesday next week.

Sport

From a sporting perspective, we congratulate our amazing K-6 students who proudly represented their Houses at the Junior School Athletics Carnival held yesterday. Students are to be commended for the positive way that they participated fully, giving of their best and supporting others. On the back of the recent Senior School Athletics Carnival, it has been terrific to see Associated and Catholic Colleges (ACC) athletics squad members training hard in a bid to make the Av�԰� team to compete in the upcoming ACC A Division Athletics Carnival. We encourage students to fully commit to the preparation scheduled and know that they will represent to College with great pride next Wednesday at WA Athletics Stadium.

We are also very excited to inform our community of the College’s involvement in the ACC Inclusive Sports Program (ISP) Athletics Carnival this Friday at UWA Sport Park. The ISP “is integral to the ACC mission and provides students with a disability equitable access to sporting and recreational opportunities”. Congratulations to all students involved in this significant event. We wish them all of the best for the carnival.

Spiritual Growth

Our Year 6 students meanwhile have been spending quality time preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation this Saturday in the St Thomas More Parish Church. This is a very special time in the lives of our students as they choose to make a commitment to their own faith journey. We know they will enjoy their visit to St Mary’s Cathedral in Perth this Thursday as part of the Confirmation preparation process. We look forward to gathering together on Saturday as a community to celebrate this special event alongside the students.

Community Growth

This week we celebrate the Patrons of Salvado and Xavier Houses through a series of organised activities. These daily scheduled events have been meticulously planned by College staff to deepen understanding around the significance of the Patrons and also to build community and connections amongst the students. Happy Patron week to all Salvado and Xavier staff and students.

Learning

Congratulations to students involved in the auspicious Tournament of the Minds Competition held last Saturday at ECU Joondalup. The Tournament of the Minds is a problem-solving program for teams of students from both junior and senior years which aims to develop diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a challenging and competitive environment. Our students rose to the challenges provided and worked together very well in their teams.

We are excited at the opening of our Year 9 student Personal Project Exhibition this evening. Students have been utilising their creativity and design skills and working collaboratively with mentors across many weeks to develop their individualised projects. We look forward to welcoming parents and caregivers into the school to see the outstanding projects delivered by the students.

We are also looking forward to our upcoming K-6 Open Night where Junior School students are invited to showcase their learnings and work to parents and caregivers. Students should be very proud of their achievements and excited at sharing their learning with their families.

Year 6 Confirmation

This Saturday at 3 pm, our Year 6 students will reach a significant milestone in their faith journey as they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation at Saint Thomas More Parish. This rite of passage marks an essential moment in the lives of our young people, as they deepen their commitment to the Catholic faith and take on greater responsibilities as members of the Church.

Confirmation is a profound step in the spiritual life of our students. It signifies the sealing of the Holy Spirit, empowering them with the gifts needed to live out their faith with courage, commitment, and compassion. This sacrament strengthens their bond with Christ and the Church, preparing them to be active participants in their faith communities and to witness to the Gospel in their everyday lives.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Saint Thomas More Parish for their unwavering support and guidance throughout this journey. We are also deeply thankful to the dedicated staff who have prepared our students, guiding them through the sacraments and nurturing their spiritual growth.

As our Year 6 students approach this sacred moment, we pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to inspire and guide them, helping them to live out their faith with joy and commitment. Congratulations to our confirmands and their families on this special occasion!

Gratitude for a Year of Meaningful House Patron Liturgies

As we conclude this year’s House Patron Liturgies, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our entire community for their unwavering support and participation. These liturgies have been a special time for us to come together, celebrate our House patrons, and deepen our connection to our faith.

We are especially grateful to Saint Thomas More Parish for their ongoing support, which has strengthened our bond with the parish and brought us closer to the Eucharist. Their guidance has been invaluable in fostering a deeper sense of spirituality within our college community.

A huge thank you goes out to our College’s House Community Coordinators, whose dedication and leadership have ensured the success of these liturgies. We also want to acknowledge the families who have supported their children throughout the year, helping to create a vibrant and faith-filled community.

Finally, we wish to thank our students for their reverence and participation in these sacred gatherings. Your respect and devotion have truly made these liturgies a meaningful experience for all.

As we enter into Week 3 of Term 3, it's exciting to reflect on the successful and fun-filled events that have brought our College community together. We've recently celebrated two of our big-ticket items: the lively Book Week Parade and the energetic Athletics Carnival. Both events were met with enthusiasm and participation, showcasing the vibrant spirit and unity that define our College.

Book Week

The 2024 Book Week theme, "Reading is Magical," celebrates the enchanting power of books to transport readers to fantastical worlds and ignite their imaginations. This year's theme highlights how stories can captivate minds and open doors to endless adventures. Through the magic of reading, we can explore new realms, meet extraordinary characters, and experience the wonder that only a great book can offer.

This year’s Book Week parade was a vibrant celebration of literature, engaging students from Kindergarten to Year 6 in a delightful showcase of creativity and imagination. The school grounds were filled with excitement as students paraded in costumes representing their favourite book characters. From classic fairy tale figures to heroes from modern children's literature, the variety of costumes was truly impressive, reflecting the diverse reading interests of our students.

Adding to the excitement, the event featured a surprise play performed by our dedicated staff and executive leadership team. This unexpected treat delighted both students and parents alike. The staff brought characters from a beloved story to life with humour and enthusiasm, demonstrating their commitment to fostering a love of reading in fun and engaging way.

Overall, the Book Week parade was a resounding success, with the entire school community coming together to celebrate the joy of reading. The creativity on display and the participation from everyone involved made it a memorable event that will be cherished by students and staff alike.

Junior Athletics Carnival

Our Junior athletics carnival was an incredible day filled with excitement and enthusiasm. From the opening sprints to the final relays, our students displayed extraordinary courage, taking on new challenges and pushing their limits. The spirit of compassion was evident as participants cheered each other on, offering support and encouragement at every turn. Commitment shone through in the dedication and effort each student put into their events, making the carnival a true celebration of our college values. The day concluded with smiles all around, a testament to the strength and unity of our school community.

I would like to extend my thanks to Mr Trickett and Mr Howard for running a successful event. As well as all our staff, student and parent volunteers for lending their support and help during the day.

Congratulations to Pallotti house for winning the Spirit award for the day and Merci for taking out overall winners.

Our Champion boys and girls will be announced at a later date this Term, once all results have been reviewed and confirmed.

Thursday 5 September – Popcorn sales outside the JS Courts at lunchtime, $1.00 with proceeds going to House charities.

The Personal Project Exhibition

The Personal Project is a challenge set at the start of the school year for the Year 9 students. The students have two terms to design and create a ‘Project’ based on their personal interests which involves innovation, creativity and critical thinking.

On Tuesday 3 September from 5.30pm the Year 9s will showcase their Personal Projects. The exhibition is a wonderful celebration of the diverse talents, creativity and hard work of our Year 9 students.

Year 7 STEM

Last week, our Year 7 students participated in a STEM challenge, during their Science, Mathematics and Technologies classes for the week. The problem they faced was to design and construct the tallest beacon tower possible, from limited materials, in order to support a 2kg radio transmitter to assist rescue from a desert island.

Students were assigned to small groups to collaborate on the task, in which they investigated the problem and possible solutions, then designed and produced their unique solution, before evaluating and testing the product. The week gave students a terrific opportunity to challenge themselves with new thinking and commit to collaborate with others to develop the best solution in a fun environment. On Friday, the Year 7’s gathered to test the best beacons to determine winners based on their function (the beacon holding the most weight at the greatest height) and aesthetics and innovation. Prizes were on offer for the best solutions, as well as the groups that showed outstanding commitment to the week. Well done to all of the Year 7’s for engaging in the week and to teachers for supporting students through the journey. The winners were as follows:

Head of Junior School Katya Anderson

For something a little different this week… we have a Staff Success story!

We are thrilled to congratulate our Head of Junior School, Katya Anderson, for her outstanding performance at the World Multi-Sport Championships held in Townsville this year. Katya was selected to represent Australia in the Aquathon (run, swim, run) and achieved an impressive 5th place in her age group, with only a 70-second difference between herself and first place.

This was Katya’s first-ever competition at the world championships and her first race back after recovering from a stress fracture earlier this year. Her dedication and resilience are truly inspiring.

Well done, Katya! We are incredibly proud of your achievements and look forward to celebrating more of your successes in the future.

Isla Emmerson

We are incredibly proud of Year 10 student Isla Emmerson, who recently represented Australia in the IIJL Women’s World Junior Lacrosse Championship in Buffalo, New York. This historic event marked the first time women competed in the tournament. Isla, the youngest member of the U21 team and the sole representative from Western Australia, showcased her exceptional talent. Australia began the tournament with a strong 10-5 victory against Canada. Despite narrowly losing their remaining three games, including a close 7-6 match where Isla scored, the team secured the silver medal.

Isla’s outstanding performance earned her the MVP title for Australia in Game Two, where she scored three of the team’s four goals. Her relentless hustle and dedication were truly inspiring. Isla is now turning her focus to the National Australian Lacrosse Championships, where she has been selected for the Western Australian U15 team for the third consecutive year. We look forward to seeing her continue to excel and represent our school with pride.

Kade De Luca

We are very proud of Year 12 student Kade De Luca. Earlier this year Kade was scouted by executive producers of The Voice Australia and from thousands of applications he proceeded through the extensive audition tour to be one of 80 artists Australia and NZ wide chosen for Blinds - with only a handful of those under 18.

In between studying ATAR he headed off to Sydney to perform on The Voice stage in front of celebrity coaches Adam Lambert, Kate Miller- Heidke, LeAnn Rimes and Guy Sebastian. What an incredible experience! After returning from Sydney he was invited to perform live on stage with Voice Coach Kate Miller-Heidke on her Catching Diamonds Tour, and also performed with Perth Symphony Orchestra and Joondalup Symphony Orchestra.

What an exceptional achievement Kade to be performing on the biggest stage in Australia at 17 years old.

We have enjoyed your musical journey and look forward to continuing to see your talent shine!

Learn to Swim at Av�԰�

Av�԰� Christi College offers a Learn to Swim Program onsite at the Jennifer Reilly Aquatic Centre. The aquatic centre features a covered and heated 25 metre, eight-lane indoor lap and water polo pool, a separate 12 metre learn-to-swim pool and terrace seating for 180 people.

Our Learn to Swim Program is facilitated by Speed With Style, a company who provide a unique approach to swim teaching called Individualised Custom Teaching, which was developed by Dr Nigel Williams in collaboration with head coach and Speed with Style Founder - John Williams.

The Learn to Swim program is available to both Av�԰� Christi College students and those external to the College.
