English and Literature

English and Literature in the senior years of schooling focuses on strengthening student capabilities in communication and comprehension. Through the various pathways on offer, students will be afforded opportunities to deconstruct and analyse texts, recognising the textual structures and language features in use. They will be encouraged to explore the contextual factors that shape the production and reception of texts which will empower them to create texts of their own.

The English and Literature courses seek to further develop the literacy capabilities of all students, ensuring they graduate with the lasting skills of analysis, comprehension and expression.

  • The Year 11 General English Course focuses on essential skills of comprehension and interpretation. Students will employ a range of strategies to deconstruct texts, allowing them to interpret and visualise ideas, develop informed personal responses as well as considering the ways texts are organised to shape meaning. Students will develop crucial skills for communication in a range of contexts which will prepare them for the workplace as well as further study.

  • The ATAR English course purposefully extends the critical literacy and communication skills of students while promoting the foundations of academic writing. Through both responding to and creating texts, students will consider how the language and structural aspects of texts shape meaning and offer representations of ideas, attitudes or values. Students will develop skills of comprehension and complex analysis as well as creatively producing their own imaginative, interpretive and persuasive texts.

Students will also deepen their appreciation of language, form, structure and style through the creation of their own literary texts, drawn as inspiration from their studies and broader reading.

The ATAR Literature course pairs well with ATAR History and ATAR Religion and Life and promotes a distinctly analytical and academic form of comprehension and analysis.
