Welcome to Week 3
Friends of Av性爱
We are very pleased this week to announce the formal launch of our newly designed Friends of Av性爱 strategy.
We have appreciated the input and support of parents and friends for many years at both schools prior to the amalgamation of Yidarra Catholic Primary School and Av性爱 Christi College. Our aim is to create a K-12 strategy that will promote genuine engagement from parents and caregivers across the years.
The input of our parents and caregivers is critical at this point of our K-12 journey as we plan for our exciting future. We would hope for strong input and perspectives from our families in helping to shape our school moving forward.
As I have mentioned many times, the positive impact that family engagement has on the educational development of a child is proven. We therefore encourage all our families to connect with the school as we work together in partnership to continue to strive for improved educational outcomes and overall student wellness and care.
I am very grateful for the input from families last semester to help shape the Friends of Av性爱 strategy. Key to the conversation was aligning parent and caregiver input into the core strategic direction of the school. That is, to collectively work together to achieve the College vision of being 鈥極utstanding for Others鈥.
In driving toward this vision, we will focus the key domains of Learning, Community, Ministry and Stewardship. We would therefore invite ongoing input on how we bring these domains to life at the school in a genuine way.
To this end we would like to establish a Friends of Av性爱 Consultation Group that will meet once a term to provide strategic input into these key domains. Initially this will take the form of a 鈥榮print process鈥 which will coincide with a similar strategy we are running with staff and students. This will enable us to develop our philosophy for each domain and establish key actions to implement in both the short and long term to bring them to life.
As a matter of priority, we will be seeking parent input via the consultation group into the K-12 College Uniform refresh process, along with input into the development of the College Master Plan.
We would hope to establish an Executive Team from those regularly attending the Consultation Group who would be invited to lead one of the four portfolios on behalf of the other parents and caregivers. They would assist in the preparation of meetings and the collation and development of ideas for their domain in liaison with key personal at the College.
For consistency and clarity, we aim to hold consultation meetings on Wednesday Week 5 of each term at the College commencing at 7.00pm. The first meeting is therefore scheduled for Wednesday 17 August. Following feedback, we would also like to trial parents and caregivers joining us online if they cannot be physically present for the meetings. Our aim is to have as many people involved as possible.
We encourage all parents and caregivers to participate in the regular consultation meetings to offer a broad range of participants from across all year levels. We are very interested in giving our families a voice in the ongoing growth and development for the school. We are also interested in capturing feedback from parents and caregivers via this group regarding how we can continue to improve as an organisation that aims to provide the best possible learning opportunities for its students.

The Consultation Group will also be instrumental in the ongoing development of the Friends of Av性爱 strategy. In adopting a sense of agility, we would like to explore the development of other key groups under the Friends of Av性爱 banner that will allow us to connect as a community and support one another.
One such group, again following initial feedback from parents and guardians, is the establishment of parent representatives for each class in the primary school. This group of parents would support the development of a sense of community and welcome to families connected to their respective class. They would also support the teacher in delivering key aspects of the learning program and assist in the organisation of classroom volunteers.
We would invite primary school parents and caregivers to register their interest in fulfilling a parent representative role as a Classroom Connector. The Primary team will work through a clear selection process should there be more registrations of interest than positions available. Once we establish the parent representatives for each class, we will organise to meet as a group to shape up the core elements of the role.
Can I again thank our families for their input into the development of our Friends of Av性爱 strategy. We look forward to continuing to shape our strategy via input from our consultation group to ensure that we engage with our families in a very genuine and productive manner.
College Production Grease
Congratulations to everyone involved in the outstanding College Production of Grease which ran from Friday through to Sunday last week in the Caroline Payne Theatre.
This excellent show was the result of many months of hard work and dedication from College students and staff. The production was the biggest in the College鈥檚 history with auditions taking place as far back as September last year.
Since then, the cast and crew have navigated many COVID related challenges which saw them unable to rehearse together as a group until last term. It is incredible to think that, despite these challenges, our amazing students were able to bring such a high quality and professional show to stage. The excellent performances were testament to students鈥 incredible levels of courage, commitment and dedication.
The successful Grease production again highlights the importance of the Arts at the College. The Arts provides opportunity for student expression and creativity. It promotes student voice and builds confidence and important critical thinking, collaboration and communication skills. It provides our students with an authentic audience and an opportunity for them to celebrate their unique gifts and talents.
The student performances were full of energy and life. They engaged with the audience and entertained us throughout each show. We acknowledge the amazing efforts of our cast and crew and congratulate them on their remarkable achievement.
We also recognise our very dedicated staff who provided quality support to our students. We acknowledge Director Kelsi Davis for her tireless energy, enthusiasm and agility in ensuring the success of the show. We also recognise the outstanding efforts of contributing staff including Jo-Anne Palmer, Caroline Stevenson, Charles Pinkham, Chris Hastie, Donna McCrystal, Melissa Kelly, Melanie Bird, along with the staff backstage crew, tech crew and the administration and marketing teams.

Kindergarten 2025 鈥 Apply now
If you have a child born between 1 July 2020 鈥 30 June 2021, please apply now for 4-Year-Old Kindergarten commencing in 2025.
While we will not be interviewing for this cohort until a few years鈥 time, to avoid missing out on a place, applications are encouraged well in advance as places are limited. You can apply online, here:

Av性爱 Christi Day Bric-a-Brac Stall - donations welcomed
At the upcoming Av性爱 Christi Day on Thursday August 18 2022, we will be running a Av性爱 鈥楤ric-a-Brac鈥 stall. For those who are unsure of what this is, it is like a garage sale or swap meet.
The idea is for students/families to donate unwanted items (toys, dvds, clothes, books, games etc) and the store sells them on Av性爱 Christi Day Day to fundraise for our chosen charities.
If you have anything you would like to donate, please bring it in to student services at your respective campus.
College Private Bus Services 鈥 Students Without Cards
The College operates two private bus routes in the morning and afternoon. These bus routes cater for families living in southern suburbs not directly serviced by a convenient public transport route to and from the College.
This service requires fares to be paid by students upon boarding using their SmartRider cards with credit added through FlexiSchools account. There is an increasing number of students who are consistently boarding the bus services without a card. To ensure the ongoing continuity and viability of these bus services, please would caregivers check there are sufficient funds on the relevant FlexiSchools account. Instructions on how to set up and top up a FlexiSchools account are and to top up the account .
Students are reminded that it is a condition of entry to these private bus services, that a card with sufficient funds be provided to pay the fare, and that a face mask is to be worn while onboard the service.

Talent Show - entries due tomorrow
Calling all singers, bands, dancers, entertainers to audition for the 2022 Talent Show to be held on Av性爱 Christi Day 鈥 Thursday 18 August 2022!
We invite students from Years 4-12 to upload a three minute maximum audition piece to the following link, by Wednesday 3 August:
Judging will take place in Week 3 to decide who will be selected to perform on the day.

Primary Meet the Teacher Morning Tea
Following assembly on a Friday, from approximately 9.15am 鈥 10.00am, parents and guardians will be invited to a 鈥楳eet the Teacher鈥 morning tea for their child鈥檚 year group.

Secondary Athletics Carnival
We encourage all of our students to be outstanding for others by representing their House with pride and giving their best in the events!

The Inter-House Athletics Carnival for Secondary Students will be held in Week 4 on Friday 12 August 2022. A timetable of events for the day is now available for viewing.
Pre-Carnival
The timetable for pre-carnival events, to be held in Weeks 3 and 4, is also available. Events include Discus, Javelin, High Jump and the 1500m.
Please note that due to weather we have postponed some pre-carnival events that were initially scheduled for Tuesday 2 and Wednesday 3 August. The new dates are available on the timetable.

Primary Spelling Bee
Av性爱 Christi College Competition (Years 3-6): Tuesday 30 August 2022

This year, Year 3 students are encouraged to participate at the Av性爱 Christi College competition level. Although Year 3 are not included in the Inter-school competition, it is a wonderful way for students to become involved and begin to develop the skills needed for a successful representation at future inter-school competitions.
The Av性爱 Christi College Spelling Bee will determine our representatives at this year鈥檚 Regional Inter-school Competition.

The 2022 Inter-school Spelling Bee will take place this year at Av性爱 Christi College. All inter-school representatives will attend two 1 hour workshops with Mrs Paparella to enhance their spelling prowess and skills prior to the September competition.

Topic: Vaping 鈥 鈥榮hort and sweet鈥: What do parents need to know?
Vaping (the use of electronic cigarettes, e-cigarettes or 鈥榲apes鈥) has become a growing issue for many parents across the country. This session will provide up-to-date and accurate information on the use of e-cigarettes and vaping, including the potential harms associated with the use of these devices, particularly young people. Practical advice will also be provided on how to talk to young people about vaping, as well as some possible responses that parents can use should their child attempt to challenge them in this complex area.

Year 6 Parent Child Workshop for Confirmation
Thank you to Year 6 students Eliza and Finn for sharing this write-up:
On Tuesday 26 July, at 6.00pm and 7.30pm, the Year 6 students were invited to attend the Parent Child Confirmation workshop to help us understand about the Sacrament of Confirmation.
When we first arrived, we sat down in circles of 10 (including our parents) and discuss what happens during the Mass of Confirmation. This was a night for us to learn more about ourselves and our parents. We really enjoyed this event as we felt we connected and bonded with our parents during the many discussion and interactive activities.
One of these activities included when we sent our parents to stand in front of a poster which represent the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. We then have to share with them why we chose this gift for them. This activity was then repeated, and we swapped roles with our parents.

Secondary Pick Up and Drop off Zones
The welfare of students is our number one priority at Av性爱 Christi College. Please ensure when you are entering the College grounds to drop off or pick up at Secondary, to:
Immediately proceed as far forward as you can
Use the second entry lane to keep moving forward
Do not stop close to the entrance of the College as this causes traffic congestion on Murdoch Drive
Do not perform a U-Turn near the entrance of the College as this is dangerous
Be courteous to one another
Abide by the speed limit in place, for the safety of our students crossing
By following the signage and road rules we can ensure a safe and continuous flow of traffic for all.

Chisholm Day
On Wednesday 27 July our Secondary students celebrated Chisholm Patron Day. Chisholm students wore their House shirt on this day in honour of their Patron, Caroline Chisholm.
During recess and lunch there were food stalls and activities, with all proceeds going to the Chisholm House charity Communicare.

Middle School (Years 7-9)
Richard Branson said, 鈥淓very risk is worth taking as long as it鈥檚 for a good cause and contributes to a good life.鈥 This is certainly most apparent in Middle School as students navigate finding themselves, finding those they have in common and finding their limits.
Our focus for Middle School this term is 鈥淯nderstanding Risk Taking Behaviour鈥 鈥 a theme that lends itself to the core of innovation and creativity but also danger and potential harm. We want our students to explore without the limits that can dull or bind their potential, both in and out of the classroom. This requires some thought and reflection because as we all know too well, every action has a consequence, and our roles as educators and parents are to help guide them in understanding these risks and consequences.

ACC Champions - Year 10 Boys AFL
Congratulations to our Year 10 boys who won the ACC Year 10 AFL Carnival last week, following wins over Newman College, La salle College and Mater Dei College. There are 6 Divisions in the competition, which means that Av性爱 Christi College will be promoted to Division 1 in 2023!
The team was led by Coach Rowan Platel, Assistant Coaches Jack Johnston (Year 12) and Kane Lucas (Prac Student)and team captains Huson Pivac and Cooper Moore.
It鈥檚 great that the young men listed below have been able to come together and achieve something very positive for others. Well done to you all!

Year 10 Leadership Opportunity Awaits
The Year 10 cohort have been given an exciting opportunity to nominate to be part of a Leadership Conference/Av性爱 during the Term 3 holidays. The Av性爱 will be a unique way for students to broaden their networks, friendships and their leadership skills. I encourage students looking towards leadership in their final years of schooling to consider this opportunity.
The Fogarty Futures Leadership Conference is a four-day camp running from the 7-10 October that offers 45 students from across Western Australia the opportunity to engage in workshops, hear from motivational speakers and connect with like-minded students. The conference itself is organised and facilitated by first year Fogarty scholar university student volunteers who are passionate about youth leadership. This year is the 10th anniversary of the Fogarty Futures Leadership Conference and will be centred around the four themes of innovation, social impact, resilience and inspiring leaders of tomorrow.
The conference has had the pleasure of hosting many influential speakers such as Fiona Wood and WA Chief Scientist Peter Klinken. Students also have the ability to participate in valuable leadership workshops and activities including politician panels and public speaking and networking seminars. Past workshops have been delivered by local organisations such as 180-Degrees consulting, Bloom and ASEAN-Australia Strategic Youth Partnership and help students develop crucial soft skills such as problem solving, teamwork and critical thinking.

Total Engagement
A challenge for our students is to focus on extending their skills to overcome a challenge to feel fully engaged and experience a state of flow.
Being able to single-mindedly focus their attention on totally engaging in overcoming a challenge, or doing a task to their optimum level, provides them with opportunities to experience flow. Their attention can be fractured by the ever-present distraction from their phones, making the experience of flow nearly impossible. When they choose to tackle a challenge or a task, the very first thing that they need to do is to either turn off their phones or put them on flight mode.
Page 38 and 39 of the Secondary College Diary have some activities that you can help your child with in becoming more engaged in the task at hand. Discuss the following questions and ask your child to to journal their thoughts
When is a time you felt that you experienced flow and was it enjoyable?
What is a challenge that would really stretch your abilities and provide you with an opportunity to experience flow?
What are the possible consequences for those who choose to stretch themselves and their skills on challenges to experience flow and then those who choose to only tackle things in their comfort zone?
What resilience skill could help you with Total Engagement (see pages 6&7)?
Read and discuss Mindfulness Time, ask your students to try some activities from these websites.
Identify a challenge, turn off their phones and go for it mindfully.
Emotional Hijacking
It is important for students to be able to identify warning signs they feel when their emotions are starting to control their thinking.
Students鈥 thinking is influenced by two competing parts of their brains, the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex.
The amygdala is the unconscious part which generates emotions. It is well developed in students and causes the fight or flight reactions, depending on the intensity of positive or negative emotions produced (called fast track responses).
The prefrontal cortex is the conscious rational part which controls the intensity of their emotions to make better decisions (called slow track responses). It not fully developed till they reach their early twenties, meaning their responses to what they experience may vary considerably.
When their amygdalas are in charge of their feelings, good decision-making is difficult; often called emotional hijacking. The key is to raise their self-awareness of this, so that they are able to self-regulate their emotions. Cultivate this by:
practise colouring in using repetition, patterns and control.
initiating discussions about positive, negative, mixed and hidden emotions and their intensity.
helping them create their own positive coping and self-calming strategies to reduce emotional intensity.
learning how to use assertive and positive self-talk to combat hijacking
doing Mindfulness Activities to reconnect with themselves and the moment.

Vinnies Winter Appeal
Last Term we launched the Vinnies Winter Appeal in the both the primary and secondary campus. Each year group/section of the College had a focus:
Primary students: blankets
Year 7: Socks
Year 8: Toiletries
Year 9: Winter accessories (scarfs, gloves, beanies)
Years 10 鈥 12: winter clothing
A big thank you to all students who have donated their items, especially to Year 7 Merici, Year 8 de Vialar and Merici, to Year 9 Merici, Pallotti and Romero and to Year 10 MacKillop for their wonderful donations. A small thank you is coming your way.
To end our Vinnies Winter Appeal 100 students and 6 staff participated in annual Vinnies Sleep Out. This is when our staff and students stand in solidarity for one another and feel what it might be like for someone sleeping rough. The night consisted of three panellists from Homeless We Care WA, Orange Sky Landry, and Street Chaplains. Then they engaged with our theme and completed posters on different agencies that are there to support the homeless. To read more about this event, .
Secondary Av性爱us Faith in Action Due Dates
Our Year 11 student due date is coming up soon, Week 5 鈥 Friday 19 August, so please make sure you hand in your record of service sheet to the Upper Room for collation. You will need a minimum of 30 hours, from Years 10 and 11. If you are new to the College, please touch base with Ms Thomas who will direct you about your hours.
Remember information is in your diary on page A29 and A30, notices in Seqta and in the eNews each fortnight.
Year 10 Students yours are due by Term 4 Week 2, Friday 21 October. You are required to complete a minimum of 15 hours, so make sure you have started your hours or are planning too.
Our Middle School students will once again be completing Selfless September so please keep a look out for that in the coming weeks.
Remember to always 鈥渦se your gifts to serve one another鈥.
Quest Retreat
On the last day of Term 2, the Year 11 and 12 quest and cadre leaders orchestrated the Quest Retreat for our Year 7s. The day kick started with some ice breaking activities. This was followed up by some recreation sports which consisted of activities like dodgeball, octopus, tunnel ball and dog and bone. After this and recess, the students came back to learn more about their house but more importantly, get a better understanding of their patron saint. To test their knowledge the students participated in a homeroom scavenger hunt where the questions were based off their house and with each correct answer, would lead to an activity which encouraged a bond between their peers. Straight after this, the students and leaders all took turns in painting a tree with their handprints. These would be later presented during the prayers of the faithful at the liturgy at the end of the day.
To conclude a fabulous day, the Year 7 students were grouped into the homerooms where they each read letters sent by their respective families. This was a time for self reflection, as they were called to think about their lives and how they will lead it, especially in such an influential time like high school. Once they had read this letter they were instructed by the cadre and quest leaders to write a letter to their future Year 11 self, which they will read in four years time.
Shortly after this all students gathered together in the theatre for the closing liturgy. During this liturgy, all the year sevens maintained such an amazing sense of reverence as they learnt all about the theme of the day - 鈥渆veryone has their own story.鈥
An amazing performance of 鈥淚 See the Light鈥 from the movie Tangled was played by Cadre Leaders Brendan, Audrey, Isabella, Siarne, Em, and Declan. Many Year 7s commented saying 鈥渢hey sounded so good.鈥
The Year 7s were called to reflect in the parable of Zaccheas the Tax collector, and how Important forgiveness is. One of the Cadre Leaders Em, volunteered to share with the Year 7s her own personal experiences throughout high school, offering real life situations in which she had to forgive people, and how she found her place in Av性爱 life. This gave all the Year 7s a chance to really connect and gave them an opportunity to relate to Em, allowing a more humanistic perspective to Year 12s. The parable of Zaccheas the tax collector and Em鈥檚 story passed along many inspiring messages, 鈥渢o be who you are鈥 and to 鈥渁lways have room for God in your life, to guide you.鈥
To close the liturgy many prefects and Cadre Leaders surprised the Year 7s with a final song 鈥 鈥淨ue Sera鈥 by the Justice Crew. As one of the prefects I can really say that this was a very special moment for us, and seeing the reactions on the faces on the Year 7s as we all belted this song out from the top of our lungs, whilst jumping all around the stage, was definitely a highlight to our years. Even though we may have looked silly with our friends and fellow Cadre Leaders Tom and Hugh dressing up like Eminem and rapping, whilst we all stood in the background dancing, we hoped to show the Year 7s that high school is about having fun, and being who you are. We hoped to have passed on the message that high school is a journey, it can be rough at times but there are certain moments that make it worthwhile, and those moments are always guided by God. We hoped to have shown the Year 7s through our actions and our conversations throughout the day that God is like your own best friend, and that he will never leave you, no matter what.

Tim Winton Young Writers Competition 2022
The City of Subiaco presents the 30th annual Tim Winton Award for Young Writers. This creative writing award is open to Western Australian school students and encourages imagination, innovation and creativity.
Entries for the Tim Winton Awards open at 9.30am on Monday 18 July.
To enter, register and submit your work online before 5.30pm on Friday 12 August.

St John of God Health Care Performing Arts Scholarship
Nominations are now open for the St John of God Health Care Performing Arts Scholarship. After a successful inaugural partnership with the Catholic Arts Office in 2016, St John of God Health Care are again providing $1500 to enable a performing arts student to pursue their talent. St John of God Health Care have very generously provided a second scholarship. So there is now one for a student in the metropolitan area and one for a regional student.
St John of God Health Care is committed to promoting participation in the arts because of the many health benefits it brings to individuals and communities.
Nominations for the Scholarship are open to students in Years 6 鈥 12 who have a passion and demonstrated commitment to performing arts, but due to economic hardship or personal circumstances may be restricted in their ongoing participation.
Please provide them to Arts Administration Donna McCrystal by Friday 12 August 2022.

Student Success
Elizabeth K (Year 6)
Last week Elizabeth K performed Romance by James Bastien as part of the Catholic Performing Arts Festival 鈥 Spirit of the Arts. Elizabeth received a participation certificate for performing in the event and represented the College with great passion and skill. We look forward to hearing more of Elizabeth鈥檚 wonderful piano skills in the future.
Lucy Kelly (Year 7), Josh Trant (Year 9), Kiara Trant (Year 10) and Oliver George (Year 12)
Lucy recently performed in the Bel Canto Performing Arts production of Singin鈥 in the Rain Jr at the Old Mill Theatre.
Due to COVID, the original stage crew weren鈥檛 able to participate and so Oliver, Josh and Kiara volunteered their holiday time to step up and fill in.

Gisella Colletti (Year 9)
In the holidays Gisella had the pleasure of performing as a support act for Frank Pesely, Australia鈥檚 number one Elvis tribute artist who will be representing Australia in Memphis USA in August.

Year 11 Art Students
Well done to Keerthana Binu and Will Lewis on having their art exhibited at HyperVision. Drug Aware HyperVision is an annual exhibition promoting the creative expression and talents of young people aged 15 - 25 years from across WA. This year鈥檚 exhibition showcases works across a diverse range of traditional and experimental media, including digital and sculptural installations. Artists have responded to the word 'time' and presented their interpretation of the relationship between time and the COVID-19 pandemic. The exhibition runs until 27 August 2022.

Year 12 Art Students
Congratulations to Dawn Albuquerque, Tayah Freeman and Claudia Werch, whose pieces were exhibited at the recent 19th Annual St George Art Exhibition. 95 works were entered by over 30 schools showcasing the top quality of visual arts in the state. Well done to Dawn whose work was highly regarded as a second-place winner.
