Review and Reflection

Welcome to the final week of what has been a very busy and eventful semester, filled with a broad array of different growth opportunities for students across the K-12 College.

As Term 2 draws to a close our students are encouraged to pause and look back over the first half of the year to consider what they have learned and what actions they would like to adopt to support their future growth. This of course applies to learning within the classroom but extends also to the many different holistic growth opportunities available for our students.

To facilitate the reflection process, students will soon be receiving their Semester 1 Reports which will provide them with a clear guide as to how they are progressing from an academic and pastoral perspective. The reports highlight a level of achievement at a certain point in time and are intended to prompt conversation around possible areas of improvement.

We promote the concept of a learning journey, implying that learning does not stop, rather it is continuous and cumulative, built on previous experiences and opportunities. They key is to pause, reflect, evaluate and adjust current practice, and then set clear, measurable and achievable future goals to move forward.

We want our students to ask questions regularly and to seek out support from teachers at points of need. Our aim is also for our students to be agents of their own learning which is defined by OECD as “the capacity to set a goal, reflect and act responsibly to effect change. It is about acting rather than being acted upon; shaping rather than being shaped; and making responsible decisions and choices rather than accepting those determined by others”. We want to promote in our students the capacity for them “to learn to navigate by themselves through unfamiliar contexts, and find their direction in a meaningful and responsible way instead of simply receiving fixed instructions or directions from their teachers” (OECD). We want students to become active learners who continually seek out ways to improve no matter what their level of achievement.

The engaging educational environment at Av�԰� Christi College, purposefully ignites an energy and enthusiasm for the discovery of new learnings in our students. We strive to create the conditions that allow student agency to flourish where students are inspired to shape their educational journey as they transition through the College to their future pathways.

Whilst the reports provide a summary of learning across the semester, it is hoped that students and parents have been monitoring student progress via regular communication with teachers and accessing results through SEQTA. In effectively utilising assessment outcomes and consistently seeking authentic feedback from teachers, students can use assessments as a tool for learning. They can monitor their own learning, ask relevant questions and use a range of strategies to decide what they know and what they need to do to discover new learning.

In promoting parent and caregiver engagement which, as we know has a very positive impact on student learning outcomes, we encourage families to review student progress together and codevelop a plan moving forward with support from teachers at the College.

At Av�԰� Christi we promote the holistic development of our students with our focus therefore extending to growth beyond the classroom. In encouraging students to strive toward our Vision of being Outstanding for Others, we look for authentic and engaging ways for students to pause and reflect outside of the regular school routines. A recent example of this philosophy was our Year 12 Retreat where students took time out of their busy schedules to escape the daily routines and reflect on their own spiritual faith journey.

In physically retreating from the College for three days across five different sites, students escaped the pressures of the Year 12 environment to reflect on their lives and the pending crossroad that are rapidly approaching for them as graduands of the College.

The Year 12 students are to be commended for the positive and industrious way that they fully invested themselves in the retreat program. Students had the opportunity to look back to move forward, to connect with old and new friends and to reflect on the importance of family and the special people in their lives. They were encouraged to explore their personal faith journey and to connect with Jesus through prayer.

Our Year 12 students lived our values through showing great courage, commitment and compassion in connecting with others on retreat and stepping outside of their comfort zone to grow. They took full advantage of this special growth opportunity and are to be acknowledged for their contribution to the success of the retreat. We of course acknowledge our amazing staff, led by Mr Damian Chandler, for their support and dedication in organising and running the retreats.

Growth is developmental; it builds over time. As we shape our lives moving forward it is important to take time to genuinely reflect and review, to set goals and choose appropriate pathways, to seek support and advice and to celebrate special achievements and significant people.

We hope that families take the opportunity over the holiday break to reconnect and enjoy some quality time together. We look forward to our students returning to us safe and well to commence Term 3 on Tuesday 18 July.

Enrolments and Withdrawing Update

Sibling Applications

We encourage applications well in advance of the entry year and encourage families to keep up to date with the Enrolment timelines as advertised on our website.

2026 cohort applications for Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Year 7.
2027 cohort and beyond.

Withdrawing from the College Information

A reminder to parents, if you are withdrawing your child from the College you are required to give a Term's notice in writing. Failure to give adequate notice will result in a Term's fees being charged as per the terms and conditions of enrolment. Please liaise with your childs Classroom Teacher or Head of Year prior to withdrawing. Uniform Reminder

Term 3 will continue to be Winter Uniform.

The Senior School Uniform Shop will be open on Friday 14 July 9.00 am -12.00 pm.

Week 10 Update

As we approach the end of the term, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the progress and achievements of our students, as well as provide important updates for the upcoming term.

First and foremost, I am incredibly proud of our student's hard work and dedication throughout this term. They have shown remarkable growth, both academically and personally, and have embraced the values of our school community. Their enthusiasm and engagement in their studies have been truly inspiring, and I am confident that they will continue to thrive in the coming term.

In addition to their academic accomplishments, our students have also actively participated in various extracurricular activities and events. I have witnessed their talents in sports, arts, and other areas, and I commend them for their commitment and sportsmanship. These experiences outside the classroom are integral to their holistic development, and I encourage them to continue exploring their interests and passions.

Music Recital Night

Wonderful seeing our students from Years 3 to 6 showcase their musical talents alongside the senior students. For many of the students, this was their first time performing on a stage in front of an audience. I left the evening feeling a great sense of pride and awe at the many gifts our students have.

First Holy Communion

It is truly remarkable to witness the Year 4 students have their First Holy Communion this term. It was wonderful to share this celebration with families, staff, and students. Thank you to Father Phong and the Year 4 teachers, Mr Overton, Mrs Craine and Mrs de Groot, for preparing the students for this Sacrament.

CAPSS Cross Country

On Tuesday, 20th June, 48 of students in Years 3 to 6 competed in the interschool cross-country carnival. Congratulations to all students on the phenomenal results and on bringing back the winning shield.

New Staff Term 3

Mr Simon Overton and Mr Tony Del Grossi will be off next term on Long Service Leave. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the following teachers who will be covering their classes while away.

Ms Michelle Yoon – covering 4 Blue.
Mrs Elizabeth Moller – covering 5 Blue.

Both teachers come with a wealth of experience, and we are excited to have them as part of our team next year.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to Mr Luke Cunningham, who has covered our Physical Education lessons this term. He has been a wonderful addition to our Av�԰� Christi community, bringing with him some fresh ideas. We wish him all the best next term.

Sickness during term

With the winter months upon us, to help stop the spread of illnesses, we encourage families to please keep their children at home if sick. Thank you for your support and understanding.

Morning Drop off

This a friendly reminder to families that the school’s duty of care in the morning starts at 8.15am. Families are encouraged not to drop their children off at school before this time as they would be unsupervised. If you require an earlier drop-off, Av�԰� Australia is open from 7.00 am. Your child’s safety is of the utmost importance to us; therefore, we appreciate your support in this matter.

Religious Education Assessment 2023

At the request of the Western Australian Bishops, Year 3, Year 5 and Year 9 students in Catholic schools across Western Australia will take part in the Religious Education Assessment (REA) from the week commencing Monday 24 July in Term Three. The assessment will be accessible to students only online.

Students enrolled in Year 3, Year 5 and Year 9 who are following a regular classroom program are expected to participate. Students with disability are entitled to participate in the assessment. Exemptions may apply.

College Family Mass

We have our next College Family Mass at St Thomas More Bateman Parish scheduled for Saturday 29 July at 6.00pm.

This will coincide with the Year 6 Confirmation Commitment Mass, but all K-12 families and staff are warmly invited to attend.

Learn to Swim at Av�԰�

Av�԰� Christi College offers a Learn to Swim Program onsite at the Jennifer Reilly Aquatic Centre. The aquatic centre features a covered and heated 25 metre, eight-lane indoor lap and water polo pool, a separate 12 metre learn-to-swim pool and terrace seating for 180 people.

Our Learn to Swim Program is facilitated by Speed With Style, a company who provide a unique approach to swim teaching called Individualised Custom Teaching, which was developed by Dr Nigel Williams in collaboration with head coach and Speed with Style Founder - John Williams.

The Learn to Swim program is available to both Av�԰� Christi College students and those external to the College.
