Welcome to Week 4, Term 1

Building Belonging and Connection

As you would be aware one of our core strategic pillars at the College is ‘community’. Our intent is to create an environment that allows our students to flourish. We strive to be a welcoming and inclusive community that celebrates the uniqueness and diversity of each person.

We want to create the conditions that nurture the wellbeing, strength, and gifts of each individual to allow them to develop fully as whole persons. We aim to achieve this through building belonging, empowering students and providing rich care and support. Of course, we work in strong partnership with our families to co-create this type of thriving College environment.

It was wonderful therefore to see so many parents and caregivers wholeheartedly engage in our recent round of Parent Information Evenings across the K-12 College. We look forward to presenting additional parent engagement opportunities for remaining year levels later in the year to align with key events and milestones planned for these groups.

Some clear messaging at these events surrounded confirming the invitation for all parents and caregivers to engage in the learning of their child via SEQTA and through direct connection with teachers.  We also strongly promoted the important role of the Homeroom Teacher in the Senior School and the Classroom Teacher in the Junior School as the first port of call should there ever be any area of concern or issues. We warmly welcome regular parent/caregiver contact with College staff to build quality connections and support the holistic growth of all of our students.

Renown global educationalist Dr Lyn Sharratt provides advice on how to engage with students in their learning, whilst encouraging them to take ownership of their own growth and development, through asking them these 5 questions:

  • What are you learning?

  • How are you doing?

  • How do you know?

  • How can you improve?

  • Where do you go for help?

These simply yet probing questions allow students to reflect on their own learning and to explore avenues that might allow them to improve. In regularly asking these questions of their children, parents and caregivers can connect to their child’s learning in a genuine way, unpack potential areas of concern and, importantly, show the child that there in genuine interest and engagement in their learning.

We were also very pleased last week to run the first of our Interhouse Swimming Carnivals, with the remaining two events being held today and tomorrow. We are especially excited to celebrate the first Interhouse Carnival for the Junior School, with their efforts contributing to the overall tally across the K-12 school. These students, like all others in the school, will proudly represent their House as they give of their best in the pool and cheer strongly from the sidelines.

The Interhouse Swimming Carnivals provide an additional pathway to allow our students to shine. They promote a sense of resilience, determination and perseverance. They can provide a challenge for students and encourage them to step out of their comfort zone. Underpinning this environment of course is the rich environment of care, support and belonging that allows students to rise to the challenge and to give of their best in representing their House.

Congratulations to the Year 10-12 students who gave of their best last Friday and joined in the spirit of the event. Well done to the Year 7-9 students competed today and the Junior School students swimming tomorrow. In the spirit of belonging and connection, we again warmly invite families to attend the carnivals, with tea/coffee facilities available to enhance the experience.

Looking ahead, we are very excited to inform you that Mr Paul Litherland is again speaking with selected year groups this year about Cyber Security and Internet Awareness. Paul is an expert in this field and presents to over 850 schools and organisations across Australia. He is recognised nationally as a leading educator in the field of Internet Awareness. In support of a common language and promotion of parent educational opportunities, we invite all parents and caregiver to attend an evening session with Paul on Wednesday 28 February in the Caroline Payne Theatre commencing at 6.30pm. In again looking to next week, we are very excited at the prospect of our whole school gathering together on Tuesday 27 February at 5.30pm to celebrate our annual Community Mass. We hope to see many parents, families and friends present to share in this very special occasion.

We look forward to updating families on the many future events and opportunities for them to engage with the College to build belonging and connection and to support the continued growth of our flourishing school environment.

Welcome to another edition of our Junior School e-News where the spirit of curiosity and discovery continues to thrive! This week, we're excited to have year 6 Green showcase the incredible work they have been doing in exploring their character strengths. It's been an inspiring journey of self-discovery, and our assembly illuminated their enthusiasm on Tuesday.  It was a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate the uniqueness of each child and the empowering journey towards understanding and embracing their individual strengths.

Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday Celebrations:

The past week was filled with joy and reflection as we observed Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday. Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Day, brought smiles to every face as our students and families enjoyed delicious pancakes together. It was a day of indulgence before the solemn season of Lent.

Following Shrove Tuesday, we transitioned into Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. Our Junior School students in Years 3 to 6 participated in a meaningful Mass hosted at St Thomas More, where they received ashes on their foreheads as a symbol of humility and repentance. The reflective atmosphere allowed our young learners to understand the significance of this season and embrace the values of self-discipline, prayer, and giving back to the community. Our early childhood students from Kindy to Year 2 had a smaller reflective session in their class and received their ashes there. Together, we embark on this Lenten journey with a sense of unity and purpose.

House Swimming Carnival Year 3 to 6

Get ready to dive into the excitement as we eagerly await the much-anticipated House Swimming Carnival this Friday! The pool is set, the teams are buzzing with enthusiasm, and the air is filled with anticipation for a day of thrilling aquatic competitions. It's not just a day of swimming; it's a day of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and cheering for our fellow housemates. Whether you're a first-time participant or a seasoned swimmer, this carnival promises to be a splash of fun for everyone. So, bring your spirit, wear your house colours proudly, and be prepared for an unforgettable day of friendly rivalry and laughter. Let's make waves and create memories together at this year's House Swimming Carnival!

An announcement of the students attending the CAPSS Inter-School Swimming Carnival (YR 4 to 6) will be made on Monday 26 February. Parents will receive email notifications via SEQTA.

Pre-Primary House Allocation Event:

Anticipation is building for the upcoming Pre-Primary House Allocation event! This much-anticipated occasion marks a significant milestone in our young students' journey. On Wednesday 28 February, our Pre-Primary stars will be sorted into their respective houses. The event promises to bring a joyous atmosphere as our little ones discover their house families and embark on a journey of friendship and shared experiences. Parents are invited to join us and witness the smiles and laughter that will undoubtedly fill the room. Let's make this House Allocation event a special memory for our youngest learners as they take their first steps into the vibrant world of house spirit!

Light morning tea will be provided as an event for parents to connect.

2024 School Fees and Return of Payment Plans

The  was announced to the College community in the . The 2024 school fees were sent to families on Monday 12 February 2024. If families elect not to enter the pre-determined payment plans available, then the full amount will be payable on 23 February 2024.

For families wishing to enter a payment plan, please complete and return the payment plan form included with the school fees. This payment plan form is required annually due to the changes in the fees on an annual basis, so updated authority is required to take a different amount. Alternatively, if families want to elect to have an ongoing payment plan, without the need to complete the form annually, please complete and send the . 

It is very important to return the Payment Plan Form to CollegeAccounts@corpus.wa.edu.au as soon as possible, these were requested to be returned at the latest by 4.00pm on 19 February 2024. The first payment is scheduled for 23 February 2024, so adequate time is required to enter all payment plans before this date. Any payment plans that miss this first payment date will need to be entered to commence as soon as possible before the end of February 2024.

The College is pleased to support with a variety of payment options including BPay, Direct Debit (Credit Card), Direct Debit (Bank Account), EFTPOS (at the College Junior and Senior Receptions) or Cash. If you are electing to pay via BPay, please still advise the College through the Payment Plan Form that this is your method of payment so this can be recorded in the system.

Public Speaking

Do you get nervous speaking in front of the class? Would you like to develop your leadership skills? Would you like to get more involved in the College community? If so, come along to Public Speaking. Here you will meet new people and learn about how to overcome your fears of speaking in public. You will also have fun along the way!

This activity is open to ALL students from Yr 7 to Yr 12. 
NO experience necessary.

Public Speaking is a popular extra-curricular activity which is open to all students from Years 7 to 12. Small groups meet with their coach on Tuesdays after school in Semester One. Within a relaxed, nurturing atmosphere, students from beginners to experienced speakers are coached to develop skills that will allow them to express their ideas clearly and confidently; skills that will set them up for life. 

Participants will compete in the College Public Speaking Competition at the end of Semester One. There are some opportunities for interested students to participate in external competitions including Plain English Speaking and Rotary 4 Way Test. 

Tuesdays 3:30pm – 4:30pm, Mayne Block (Commencing Week 7)

NAPLAN Update

As you may already be aware, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assessment is scheduled to take place from students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 in the coming weeks. The NAPLAN rest window is 9 days long and commences on Wednesday 13 March and concludes on Monday 25 March.

College Production Update

The ‘Scenography’ for the College production of “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” is nearing completion, with all the bells and whistles that a College production can hope for!  

This is thanks to our wonderful College Community who have come together to create the most visually stunning and unforgettable set. We literally have every ‘wizz, bang, gadget and gizmo’ that can be dreamed of. Thank you to all our amazing volunteers!

Junior School Library Reminder

Our library is open before and after school for borrowing. We are closed on Wednesday.
Parents are invited to borrow additional resources for their children if they wish.

A reminder that borrowing is for seven days only with an option to renew and students must have a library bag when taking books home.

Academic Excellence Event

Congratulations to Nitya Malik and Isaac Pavy from the Class of 2023, who were invited to attend the Academic Excellence Event held by Catholic Education WA (CEWA) at St Michael the Archangel Catholic Chapel. 

Nitya and Isaac were amongst the Top Performing Academic Students across the CEWA system, they were congratulated on their Excellent Academic results and presented with a certificate and gift by Mr Wayne Bull, Executive Director. 

We are very proud of their Outstanding achievement!

St Thomas More Bateman Parish

Permanent Part Time Position Employment Opportunity  — Parish RE/ Sacramental Coordinator

St Thomas More Catholic Church, Bateman Parish, has a vacancy for a Religious Education/ Sacramental Coordinator. This position is 15 hours a week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays), the Coordinator of the Parish Religious Education program provides leadership to assist the parish community in building a solid foundation of faith for children and their families.  In this position, the Coordinator facilitates and manages in bringing Religious Education to children who do not attend Catholic Schools.  The Coordinator works in collaboration with the Parish Priest, Catechists, Parents, the Catholic school and the Catholic Service Team.  An understanding of parish life and support of the ethos and values of the Catholic Church is required.  Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook will be advantageous.  Training will be provided for a suitable candidate.  Applicants must also be willing to undergo a formation course.

Sacramental  Program

Sacramental classes for St Thomas More Parish commence on Wednesday the 7th February from 4.00pm, please enrol and upload all necessary certificates. There will be no enrolment day next year as all enrolments are online. (During class on 7 February, 2024, ‘Form 10 - Safeguarding’ will need to be completed.)

If you are experiencing difficulties in enrolling online please send us  an email on catechist.bateman@perthcatholic.org.au  or on 93101747 on Tuesday and a Wednesday.

All children (from pre-school age on) are warmly welcomed to attend the Religious Education Sacramental program. Special arrangements can be made for High School children and Av԰ Christi College children who may not have celebrated their age relevant Sacrament.

Sacramental dates for next year will be published at a later date this year.                                      


 
 

Learn to Swim at Av԰ Christi College

Av԰ Christi College offers a Learn to Swim Program onsite at the Jennifer Reilly Aquatic Centre. The aquatic centre features a covered and heated 25 metre, eight-lane indoor lap and water polo pool, a separate 12 metre learn-to-swim pool and terrace seating for 180 people.

Our Learn to Swim Program is facilitated by Speed With Style, a company who provide a unique approach to swim teaching called Individualised Custom Teaching, which was developed by Dr Nigel Williams in collaboration with head coach and Speed with Style Founder - John Williams.

The Learn to Swim program is available to both Av԰ Christi College students and those external to the College.

Reporting of Absentees

If your child is absent from school there are a variety of ways in which parents can inform the College, more information is located here. Absentees can be reported through a variety of means, including the online form, SMS or email absentee@corpus.wa.edu.au. The least preferred method is via call due to the translation of the voice message being unclear at times, please reserve calling for emergencies only. It is very important that you provide your child’s full name, their classroom/homeroom, and the reason for their absence. Please ensure any emails are sent to Absentee@corpus.wa.edu.au and not individual staff email accounts within Student Services. The College will shortly be undertaking a review of the variety of methods used to report absences and is looking to streamlining the number of methods in which this can be done.


Enrolments Update

Year 7 2026 – Progressing Enrolment Applications has commenced!  

We have some vital information for all new and existing families who are interested in a place for Year 7 in 2026, as follows: 

Year 7 2026 - Enrolment Applications for Siblings of Current Av԰ Students 

  • Do you have a child who attends another Primary school in Year 5 in 2024? 

  • Are you interested in a place for Year 7 in 2026 for your Year 5 child? And,

  • You have another child who is a current Av԰ student?  

If you have answered YES to all of the above questions, please lodge an enrolment application for your Year 5 child as soon as possible!
Siblings of current students are required to lodge their own enrolment application in order to be considered for a place at Av԰ Christi College. 
For noting, current Av԰ Year 5, 2024 students are not required to lodge enrolment applications for Year 7 in 2026.  

Year 7 2026 – Enrolment Applications for New Families to Av԰

We have a high demand for places for the Year 7 2026 cohort year.  To avoid disappointment, we encourage all prospective families/students to lodge an enrolment application for Year 7 in 2026, as soon as possible.   

Kindergarten 2027 – Apply now!

If you have a child born between 1 July 2022 – 30 June 2023, please apply now for 4 Year Old Kindergarten commencing in 2027. 
While we will not be interviewing for this cohort until a few years’ time, places are limited and we encourage enrolment applications to be lodged in advance to avoid missing out on a place!

A reminder to parents, if you are withdrawing your child from the College you are required to give a Term's notice in writing. Failure to give adequate notice will result in a Term's fees being charged as per the terms and conditions of enrolment.
