Outstanding for Others

Our Vision at the College is to be ‘Outstanding for Others’. As a connected and inclusive community, we all constantly strive toward this Vision every day.

Our students are heavily involved in Christian Service across the years. It is an integral part of their learning journey as they progress through the College. In proactively serving those in need our students model Jesus and become his ‘hands on earth’.

Shane Lavery in his article on Christian Service Learning suggests that “involvement in the program gives students a sense of satisfaction, a feeling for social awareness, and real opportunities for learning and personal transformation”.

We therefore want to provide the conditions at our College to allow, not just students, but all within our community to reach out to others through a deep sense of social justice and desire to support others.

To this end we were thrilled for College staff to participate in a Christian Service Learning day on Monday of this week. Staff accessed a range of different service opportunities across the metropolitan area and then gathered to reflect on what they had learned.

The reflection process is a critical one as it allows us to continue to grow and learn. It allows us to adjust our perspectives, become more self-aware and to be formed in the Spirit as we connect the action to the work of Jesus.

During the afternoon session of the Professional Learning Day, College staff had the privilege to listen to Father George Kolodziej, Regional Superior of the Salvatorians in Australia and CEWA Chaplain, speak about service as an important component of wellbeing. His address entitled “Spiritual Conversations: Wellbeing and Faith” allowed us to reflect deeply on the way that we can model Jesus to be well and to build positive culture around us.

Spiritually and wellbeing can sometimes become compartmentalised – Father George however connected them through exploring the way Jesus lived his life. In addition to service, Father George provided six other practices for wellbeing that Jesus modelled in his interactions with others:

1.     Humility

2.     Graciousness

3.     Compassion

4.     Forgiveness

5.     Trust

6.     Joy

In integrating these practices into our everyday routines, we not only positively impact the lives around us, but we also help shape a vibrant and flourishing College culture. In addition, we of course improve our own wellbeing which leads to “better mental and physical health, better sleep, immunity and increased coping skills” along with being “more productive, motivated, cooperative, pro-social and charitable, and feeling less stressed, depressed and anxious” (CEWA).

We know that when students “feel good, have their psychological and social needs met, and are situated in environments that promote a wellbeing culture, they will be more ready to learn, function better as a learner, and academically benefit” (CEWA).

We also know that “fostering wellbeing through the workplace can influence both individual employee wellbeing and organisational outcomes, whilst simultaneously positively impacting students” (CEWA).

A clear focus on wellbeing is therefore a priority for us across the College. We continue to strive to develop the capabilities, conditions and connections to allow all within our College to be well and to flourish. Indeed, wellbeing is a cornerstone of our Community Pillar which help drives us toward our Vision each day.

Father George encouraged our staff to keep learning and to remain curious. As a community of learners in a very dynamic and ever-changing world, we focus on quality professional development opportunities to assist in our planning in providing the best holistic growth opportunities for our students.

We are very thankful to our parents and caregivers for their support of our staff gathering to listen, learn, act and reflect on the Monday Professional Learning Day.

In engaging with our parents and caregivers we invite them to join us on the learning journey. In adopting a shared language and common understanding, we partner with our parents and caregivers to best support the development of our students.

Two such engagement opportunities exist for parents this evening with the following guest speakers:

·    Paul Litherland’s address on internet awareness for parents/caregivers of students in Year 5-12.

·    Fr Greg Donovan's Theology session in the Parish Church for our Year 3 parents/caregivers.

We look forward to continuing to grow wellbeing across the College as we model Jesus to be Outstanding for Others.

Week 6 Update

Dear Parents and Guardians

This week marks the official celebrations of book week, with the theme this year being "Read, Grow and Inspire". Books have the remarkable effect of allowing students to open up their imaginations, journey into new lands, discover new things and, most importantly, inspire them to live out their dreams.

 To begin this week of celebrations, we have the following exciting news to share with you all, and that is Madison (Yr 4) and Summer Cox (Yr2) won first place in the state in the Children's Book Council of Australia (WA) Make Your Own Story Book Competition. What an incredible achievement, and we can't wait to read this fantastic story.

 I look forward to our book week parade on Wednesday, a chance for students to dress up as their favourite book characters and share this with their peers and teachers.

Book Week Parade Key information:

All parents are invited to watch the book week parade at the David Heath Gymnasium starting at 9 am and finishing at 10 am.

The celebrations will begin with a beautiful surprise play directed by Mr Jackson for the students and families to enjoy. From there, we will go into a mini parade around the gym for each class group.

Kindy:

  • To help ensure the parade starts at 9 am, we ask that all kindy students meet their classroom teacher at the David Heath Gymnasium at 8:50 am.

  • Kindy families are encouraged to drop their child's bag off at the classroom before going to the gymnasium.

  • After the parade in the gym, students will then parade through the senior campus as they head back to class.

PP to Year 6:

  • Students are to be dropped off at their classroom at 8:30 am. All students will walk down to the gym together at 8:45 am.

  • After the parade in the gym, students will then parade through the senior campus as they head back to class.

Kindy/Pre-Primary Car Park:

Unfortunately, an increasing number of families are using the incorrect entrance at pick-up and drop-off times. It is hazardous for cars to enter in via the no-entry lanes off Marsengo Road. I understand that parking is limited during this time; however, I must stress the importance of following the correct route around the junior campus to ensure the safety of the students as they arrive and leave school.

  •     Begin by selecting a different year level and saving your selection.

  •     Subsequently, edit the year level back to the correct one and save the changes.

Junior Library News

What an incredible experience our primary students enjoyed in week 4.

We were excited to welcome West Australian author and illustrator Gabriel Evans to our school for a whole primary school workshop.

Our students participated in a number of illustrating activities and met the man behind the amazing books he has written and illustrated.

Junior School Language Week Wrap-Up.

 

During Languages Week, Indonesia Dance Studios visited the Junior School for three days to celebrate Indonesian culture through dance and art. Our Pre-Primary, Year One and Year Two students looked amazing in their new traditional costumes from Jakarta worn by the Betawi people. They learnt traditional dance and were taught songs in Indonesian including “The love of Jesus never changes” and “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.”

With our Year Four and Five students, Indonesia Dance Studios held art workshops, teaching our students how to make batik umbrellas. The students loved it and were so proud of their finished product with some of them being inspired to work on more handicraft ideas at home.

Our Year Five and Six students enjoyed the delicate skill of making and decorating batik fans which looked very impressive. This was the first time a Primary School in Perth has made batik fans/umbrellas through Indonesia Dance Studios and it was a great success. The students are to be congratulated for their excellent manners, enthusiasm and patience when trying something new. Well done everyone! View more photos HERE.

 

Declan Kartadinata (Year 11)

Please join us in congratulating Declan Kartadinata, taking home second place in the Catenians Catholic School Speaking Competition, “Speak for Faith”, held over 12 & 13 August 2023. at Cathloic Education Centre in West Leederville.

 

Gwyneth Pranata(Year 7)

Our very own Gwyneth Pranata, recently showcased her exceptional talent and dedication at the 2023 Australian Calisthenics Federation National Championships held in Queensland from 4-8 July 2023. Participants presented routines that include various calisthenics movements set to music, demonstrating their mastery of body movements, strength, balance, and flexibility.

Western Australia Junior Team placed 3rd and overall.

Please join us in celebrating Gwyneth's success and wishing her all the best in her future endeavors. We look forward to witnessing her continued growth and achievements.

 

Lachlan Angelatos (Year 9)

Congratulations to Lachlan, on winning Gold at State Athletics Championships in the 800m event, which meant that Lachlan was eligible to represent WA at National competition.

Parish Secretary - Bateman Catholic Parish 

The Catholic Parish of Bateman has a vacancy for a permanent part time Parish Secretary, 18 hours per week (days negotiable).

Applicants must have proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, the ability to upload Parish Website content, strong organisational and time management skills, attention to detail, accuracy in data entry, and excellent verbal and written skills. Familiarity with MYOB accounting software would be highly advantageous.

Learn to Swim at Av԰

Av԰ Christi College offers a Learn to Swim Program onsite at the Jennifer Reilly Aquatic Centre. The aquatic centre features a covered and heated 25 metre, eight-lane indoor lap and water polo pool, a separate 12 metre learn-to-swim pool and terrace seating for 180 people.

Our Learn to Swim Program is facilitated by Speed With Style, a company who provide a unique approach to swim teaching called Individualised Custom Teaching, which was developed by Dr Nigel Williams in collaboration with head coach and Speed with Style Founder - John Williams.

The Learn to Swim program is available to both Av԰ Christi College students and those external to the College.

Reporting of Absentees

If your child is absent from school there are a variety of ways in which parents can inform the College, more information is located here. Absentees can be reported through a variety of means, including the online form, SMS or email absentee@corpus.wa.edu.au. The least preferred method is via call due to the translation of the voice message being unclear at times, please reserve calling for emergencies only. It is very important that you provide your child’s full name, their classroom/homeroom, and the reason for their absence. Please ensure any emails are sent to Absentee@corpus.wa.edu.au and not individual staff email accounts within Student Services. The College will shortly be undertaking a review of the variety of methods used to report absences and is looking to streamlining the number of methods in which this can be done.
